Food in School and the Community.  Fall/Winter 2021

We have been working with 7th graders at Martin Luther King, Jr School who selected as their advocacy project – Food in School and the Community.  They wound up creating “Martin’s Martin”, which is a pantry with food, clothing and health/hygiene items for students and their families.  One unexpected request for food items comes from families who are quarantined due to COVID and cannot go grocery shopping so they call the school and request food items to help tide them over until their quarantine time is over.

Jewel of the City – Health & Wellness  6/2021

We have been working on health and wellness options in Hartford.  On June 19, we celebrated Keney Park – Jewel of the City.  Keney Park has 8 walking trails, cricket & baseball fields, tennis courts,  a golf course, swimming pool and so much more.  It has all we need to pursue healthy activities in our community.  We started the day with a “gratitude walk” with the Gratitude Walkers on the Keney Park trails.  We had cricket and baseball demos.  We ended the day with a bike & helmet give-away. During this summer we gave away over 100 bikes throughout the city and provided bike riding rules of the road.

How Government Works!

Part of our advocacy work is providing education to our community.  We have embarked on a “How Government Works” series to educate ourselves and the community on what the roles and responsibilities are for various government jobs and also the paths that the current position holders took to get there and what skills they believe are required to be successful in the position.  Our interviewers are Chriss-Ann Folkes, a high school student who hopes to attend law school in the future and Sahain Jaminez,  a college student who hopes to work for the government in some international capacity.
